Public taught to protect themselves

By Emily Paige

Crime Prevention Week was launched Monday and Chatham-Kent police are ready to educate the public with a few steps for protecting themselves and their property.

The 2005 awareness program is promoting two programs, said Const. Bernie Louwerse -- Telephone Crime Alert and Operation Identification.

The Telephone Crime Alert is an “automated telephone dialing and message delivery system” that relays crime events that have taken place in your neighbourhood, he said. Phone calls are placed between 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

“If someone's home is broken into, the following night's message will relay the information.”

The program's goal is for the right person to hear the message and trigger their memory for suspicious behaviour.

To become part of the Telephone Alert program, stop in at any of the service centres to fill out a form and return it to the police station.

“All you need to participate in this program is a phone,” said Louwerse.

The second program being made public is Operation Identification.

Louwerse suggests buying a DNA print kit with indelible markers. The kit can be used to mark computers, appliances, power tools and radios.

To get a kit, call Rae Morrell at 401-5593 or email at rae@vip-protection.ca. The ink goes on invisibly and can only be seen under ultra-violet lighting, Louwerse said. The kit also provides you with a document to list all items that have been marked.

To make your mark with an engraver, stop in at a municipal service centre and sign one out for the afternoon, he said.

Once you return the engraver, you will receive a window sticker that says all items of value have been marked for fast and easy identification, said Louwerse.

The stickers are good at deterring the thief because they know it is easier for police to trace the merchandise.

“Marked articles make it easier for the police and insurance companies to trace back to the owner,” he said.

Police offer crime-fighting programs

You don't need to go to great lengths to keep from having your property stolen. Just a few simple steps taken now can be enough to stop thieves dead in their tracks.
Something as simple as engraving your licence plate number on your valuables is just one method police are promoting to the public during Crime Prevention Week, which runs from Nov.. 6 to 12.
The police service has even made at least one engraver available at each station throughout Chatham-Kent. The public can borrow one at no charge, and will also be given stickers to put in their windows to let thieves know that there is an excellent chance they're going to get caught if they steal your stuff. Engravers are also available from one of the farm mutual insurance companies which is sponsoring the project -- North Kent Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Kent & Essex Mutual Insurance Co., and Howard Mutual Insurance Co.
Known as Operation Identification, the program is also sponsored by Canadian Tire.
Police are also letting residents know the importance of keeping a detailed list of their property, which makes it much easier to find property in the case that it is stolen.
Records don't need to be written. Photographs and videotapes also do a good job of itemizing valuables.
Police are also promoting the Telephone Crime Alert Program.
By registering for the program, citizens will receive an automated telephone call about criminal activity taking place in their area. Criminals tend to hit a neighbourhood several times before moving on to a different location, so by being aware that there is a problem, residents can pay extra attention to their homes and those of their neighbours, and report any suspicious activity.
The program works and has saved taxpayers thousands of dollars by preventing thefts before they happen.
Finally, police are making the public aware of a private company, run by a retired police officer, called the DNA Print Kit.
A thumb print made with invisible ink is placed on valuables, as well as the owner's name. The ink can only be read by a special blue light. Thieves would be hard-pressed to explain how they came into the possession of goods marked invisibly as belonging to someone else.
