| Crime Scene Preservation Course |

The focus of this course is investigation with an emphasis on forensic evidence. Topics range from Fingerprint theory and practice, image capture and enhancement, crime scene protocols, management and biometrics. Examination of current controversies in the collection, preservation and analysis of forensic evidence. Special guest lectures by practicing forensic scientists will give students direct contact with the role they play in the extraction and meaning of evidence. Generally accepted practices and protocols in the collection, preservation and continuity of physical evidence are examined. Forensic evidence including autopsies, human identification, lethal agents, DNA, trace elements, bite marks and other types of new and innovative forensic evidence will be examined.

- - Methods of approach, containment, examination, recording and processing of exhibits, Case Study
Forensic Laboratories and Forensic Science
- Types of Laboratories, packaging evidence for submission
- Fingerprints and Impressions
- History of Fingerprints, skin structure, chemical composition

Fingerprints and Chemical Determination
- Digit determination, fingerprint patterns, chemical development determination,fingerprint identification and court preparation

Emerging Technology
- Forensic Video Analysis and Biometrics
- (Facial Recognition, AFIS, Iris Identification etc.)
Firearms, Blood and Body Evidence – Assignment Given
- Introduction to Firearms, how they are collected and packaged for examination
- Introduction to Blood (pooling, splatters, stains), Interpretation of blood distribution and direction and discussion of DNA
Other Trace Evidence
- Hair, fiber, glass, soil, paint and plastics,
- The Investigator in Court
- Rules of evidence, hearsay evidence, common issues that police officers encounter when testifying as a witness
